![]() ![]() But in the plan of the Father, His Son would carry His act of perfect obedience to the point of giving Himself up to death on Calvary. Because Christ is God, the very least of His works or sufferings is enough to make up for man’s sins. His Death on the Cross was the climax of His earthly lifetime of obedience to the will of the Father. His infancy spent in Egypt and His thirty years at home in Nazareth were as much a part of our redemption as were the three years of His active life and His Death. The Father now gives His own divine life of grace to people who turn to Him in faith.īy sinning, man failed to love God, but Christ’s work of redemption was an act of infinitely perfect love and obedience, which made up His whole life on earth. He did His Father’s will to honor Him and to make people happy forever in God’s Kingdom. He offered His life for love of us and for the glory of His Father. That is why He is called the Redeemer and why His work is called the work of redemption. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. The Old Testament sacrifices were only symbols of the new sacrifice of the Lamb-the Lamb of God-Who was sacrificed to give worthy honor and reparation to His Father. The Son of God made man gave that birthright back to us, by offering Himself to His heavenly Father as a victim for our redemption. Through sin, man had lost his birthright of eternal union with God-eternal happiness in Heaven. He said that He did these things so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled and that His Father’s will would be accomplished. Afterwards He raised Himself up from the dead, in order to redeem us and make us acceptable to the Father. Jesus obeyed the will of His Father by delivering Himself up for us by means of His Passion and Death. But Jesus freed us, giving us the freedom of the children of God, for, by His Resurrection, He destroyed death and gave us the life of grace. ![]() Because of Original Sin and our personal sins, we were slaves of the devil. To “redeem” means to buy back something that has been lost, sold or given away. Jesus paid a high price for our redemption, the ultimate sacrifice of His own life to free us from sin.Jesus Christ redeemed us by His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension. Just as Boaz was the kinsman-redeemer of Ruth (Ruth 3:9), Jesus redeems us (Galatians 3:13). God wants us to see Him as the One who redeems (Isaiah 43:14 44:6, 24 49:7). Christians now live in anticipation of our eternal home with our heavenly Father. Instead, he has become a citizen of God's kingdom. No longer is the Christian a captive to sin and death. Likewise, the Christian has a new identity in Christ. When God redeemed Israel from slavery in Egypt, He made them a new nation and gave them a new land. When we are redeemed, we become different people. Titus 2:13-14 says Jesus "gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession." Redemption provides several benefits for the believer: eternal life (Revelation 5:9-10), forgiveness of sin (Ephesians 1:7), a right relationship with God (Romans 5:17), peace with God (Colossians 1:18-20), the Holy Spirit to live within (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and adoption into God's family (Galatians 4:5). since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant." ![]() Hebrews 9:15 says that Jesus "is the mediator of a new covenant. The following verse then reveals we are "justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:24). Why? Because every person has sinned (Romans 3:23). In Scripture, it is clear every person stands in need of redemption. Every person is a slave to sin only through the price Jesus paid on the cross is a sinful person redeemed from sin and death. The use of redemption in the New Testament includes this same idea. As Jesus explained in Matthew 20:28, The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. God spoke of Israel's deliverance from slavery in Egypt in this way: "I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment" (Exodus 6:6). Jesus, who was blameless and perfect, suffered a criminal’s humiliating and painful death on a cross, and his act paid our sin-debt. A slave was "redeemed" when the price was paid for his freedom. What is Christian redemption? What does it mean to be redeemed? Redemption is a biblical word that means "a purchase" or "a ransom." Historically, redemption was used in reference to the purchase of a slave's freedom. ![]()
